The Phi Phi archipelago, a jewel of the Andaman Sea
Located between Phuket and Krabi, the Koh Phi Phi archipelago owes its worldwide fame to Maya Bay, the setting of the film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. This speedboat excursion, departing from Phuket hotels, reaches the archipelago in about an hour.
The day includes swimming and snorkelling at Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, with their turquoise waters ringed by limestone cliffs, then Monkey Beach to spot macaques, and finally Viking Cave, known for the swiftlet nests harvested for Thailand's famous soup.
Access to Maya Bay is managed by the national park to protect biodiversity: visiting hours and visitor numbers are capped, making for a better-preserved experience than a few years ago.
