Visit Ras Al Khaimah

A sandy coast lined with resorts, an abandoned pearling village, a hilltop fort and, an hour's drive away, the highest mountain in the Emirates with a record-breaking zipline: in three or four days, Ras Al Khaimah offers what Dubai cannot, real relief.

Why go to Ras Al Khaimah?

Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, backed by the Hajar mountains and bordering Oman's Musandam. It is home to Jebel Jais, the country's highest peak, where temperatures are markedly lower than on the coast. Its beaches and resorts are generally cheaper than Dubai's.

Ras Al Khaimah must-sees

High-altitude thrills, pearling heritage and old forts, to combine with a few days on the beach.

Jais Flight zipline

Certified in 2018 as the world's longest zipline, with about 2.8 km of cable above the Hajar mountains. Booking essential, closed in strong wind.

Jais Sledder

A mountain coaster of nearly 2 km winding along the slopes near the summit. Riders control their own speed; accompanied children allowed depending on height.

Dhayah Fort

The only hilltop fort still standing in the Emirates, built in the 19th century above palm groves. A short, steep climb leads to views of the sea and mountains.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra

A former pearling village abandoned in the 1960s: coral-stone houses, a mosque and watchtowers the emirate is gradually restoring. Superb light in the late afternoon.

Suwaidi Pearl Farm

A cultured pearl farm in Al Rams, visited by boat: the history of pearl diving, oyster opening and an explanation of nacre. Allow about two hours.

What to see in Ras Al Khaimah, from the coast to the peaks?

The old town and the creek

Ras Al Khaimah city grew up on both sides of a mangrove-lined creek: the old quarter to the west, Al Nakheel and the administrative districts to the east. The Al Qawasim Corniche, about 3 km long, makes a pleasant walk or bike ride in the early evening. The national museum, housed in the ruling family's former fort, has gone through long works: check it is open before going. Allow half a day for this area, the most authentic in the emirate and a good counterpoint to the big cities of the United Arab Emirates.

Al Hamra and Al Marjan beaches

South of the city, Al Hamra and the artificial Al Marjan archipelago concentrate the beachfront resorts, about an hour's drive from northern Dubai. The Persian Gulf water is calm and shallow there, ideal for families, and hotel rates are often gentler than in the neighbouring emirate. A large resort with a casino is under construction on Al Marjan: ask about nearby building work before booking. From November to April the water stays pleasant; in July and August it often exceeds 32 °C and barely cools you down.

The Hajar mountains and the Jebel Jais road

A winding road of some thirty kilometres climbs from the desert to just below the summit of Jebel Jais, which rises to nearly 1,900 m on the Emirati side. It is generally around ten degrees cooler than on the coast, making it the country's only summer refuge, and winter nights can approach 0 °C. Viewpoints, a panoramic restaurant, a via ferrata and an adventure camp line the route. Plan a full day, a jacket in winter, and fill up the tank before driving up.

Wadis, hikes and Musandam

At the foot of the mountains, the Wadi Shawka area offers marked trails of one to four hours, suitable from October to April only. Set off at dawn with at least two litres of water per person, and never enter a wadi when storms are forecast: floods there are sudden. To the north, the Omani border opens the road to Musandam and its fjords, explored on a dhow cruise from Khasab. Plan the whole day, bring your passport and check the entry requirements for Oman before leaving.

Frequently asked questions about Ras Al Khaimah

What are the requirements for the Jais Flight zipline?
The operator sets age, height and weight limits, to be checked when booking, as well as closed shoes. Weekend slots sell out fast from October to April. The activity is suspended in strong wind or storms, with no guarantee of a same-day reschedule.
Is it really cooler at the top of Jebel Jais?
Yes, the gap with the coast often reaches around ten degrees. In summer, afternoons stay warm but bearable while it exceeds 40 °C below; in winter, you need a jacket and nights can drop close to 0 °C. Morning fog is common up there.
Ras Al Khaimah or Dubai for a beach holiday?
Ras Al Khaimah offers quieter beaches and often cheaper resorts, ideal for a restful week with a day in the mountains. Dubai keeps the edge for nightlife, shopping and transport. Many combine both: three nights in Dubai, then four in Ras Al Khaimah.
Can you visit Musandam from Ras Al Khaimah in a day?
Yes, many agencies offer the dhow cruise through the fjords from Khasab, transport included. The border crossing takes time, so leave early with your passport. Entry rules for Oman change: check them, along with your insurance if you drive yourself.
Do you need a car to visit Ras Al Khaimah?
Not if you stay at an Al Marjan hotel: taxis and shuttles are enough. For Jebel Jais, Dhayah Fort, Al Jazirah Al Hamra and the wadis, a car is far more practical. Otherwise, book a day with a driver to group the mountain and the heritage sites.
Can you freely visit the abandoned village of Al Jazirah Al Hamra?
Yes, you can walk between the coral-stone houses and the mosque, but some fragile buildings are closed or under restoration. Come in the late afternoon for the light, wearing closed shoes. In winter, the site sometimes hosts heritage events that change access.
