Visit Labuan Bajo

Golden hills dropping into a turquoise sea, Komodo dragons watched over by rangers, manta rays gliding above the reefs and sunsets over a bay dotted with wooden boats: Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Three to four days are enough to see the essentials.

Why start from Labuan Bajo for Komodo?

Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores, is the departure point for almost all trips into Komodo National Park, a UNESCO site since 1991. Its airport has direct flights to Bali of just over an hour. It is the only place in the world to see the Komodo dragon in the wild, on the islands of Komodo and Rinca.

Labuan Bajo's must-sees

Four experiences alone justify the journey to western Flores.

Rinca dragons

On Rinca or Komodo island, ranger-led walks let you observe the world's largest lizard up close in its natural habitat, among dry savannah and mangroves.

Padar viewpoint

A laid-out trail of about 30 minutes up to a ridge overlooking three bays with sands of different colours, the park's iconic panorama.

Pink Beach

A beach with sand tinted pink by fragments of red coral, with a reef reachable straight from the shore for snorkelling.

Wae Rebo village

A Manggarai hamlet of traditional conical houses set in the mountains of Flores, reached by a winding road and then a three-hour walk.

What to do in Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park?

The town and the bay

Labuan Bajo boils down to a main street along the harbour, lined with restaurants, dive centres and boat operators. The evening fish market on the seafront grills the day's catch from 6 pm. Sunset is best watched from the hills above town, 10 minutes away by scooter. About 4 km away, Batu Cermin cave can be visited in an hour with a torch. Half a day is enough for the town: save your time for the sea.

Cruises in the national park

Speedboat trips cover Padar Island, Pink Beach, Komodo or Rinca and a snorkelling spot in one day, leaving around 6 am. Two or three day cruises on a phinisi, sleeping on board, let you reach Padar at sunrise, before the heat and the groups. Dragons can only be seen on guided walks with a ranger, lasting one to two hours. Check life jackets and radio on board: tourist boats have sunk in the park. As elsewhere in Indonesia, book with registered operators.

Diving, manta rays and seasons

The park's waters, where the Indian Ocean meets the Flores Sea, are known for strong currents and rich marine life. Manta rays visit cleaning stations such as Manta Point all year round, peaking in the wet season. Several sites are reserved for experienced divers because of the current. The dry season, roughly April to November, brings the calmest seas, while from January to March trips may be cancelled due to swell. Plan at least two days of diving and 24 hours without flying after your last dive.

Frequently asked questions about Labuan Bajo

Day trip or phinisi cruise for Komodo?
A one-day speedboat trip is enough to see the dragons, Padar and Pink Beach if time is short, but the day is long and busy. A two or three day phinisi cruise lets you see Padar at dawn, add more snorkelling stops and avoid peak hours at each site.
Should you choose Rinca or Komodo island to see the dragons?
Both islands have dragons and are visited with a ranger. Rinca is closer to Labuan Bajo and has developed facilities, while Komodo requires more sailing but offers wilder trails. Sightings are never guaranteed, whichever island you choose.
Can you see manta rays in Labuan Bajo without diving?
Yes. At sites such as Manta Point, the rays often swim close to the surface and can be seen snorkelling from the boat. The current can be strong: stay near the boat and follow the crew's instructions. Encounters are more frequent in the wet season.
How do you get to Wae Rebo village from Labuan Bajo?
Allow around half a day's drive to Denge village, then a three-hour walk through the forest. Most visitors spend the night in a traditional house and walk down the next day. A local driver and a contribution to the village are needed: arrange it through an agency in Labuan Bajo.
Can you reach Labuan Bajo by ferry from Lombok or Bali?
Yes, public ferries and multi-day cruises link Lombok to Labuan Bajo via Sumbawa, and some crossings include stops in the park. They are slower and weather-dependent. To save time, flying from Bali remains the simplest option.
