Yerevan, the pink tuff capital
Yerevan owes its rosy hue to the volcanic tuff of its facades. Allow two to three days to climb the roughly 570 steps of the Cascade, visit the Matenadaran and its manuscripts, browse the Vernissage market at weekends and taste local brandy at one of the distilleries in the centre. On clear days, Ararat dominates the city to the south. Avoid July and August, when temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C. The city makes an ideal base: most excursions are done as day trips.
