Visit Kiribati: planning a trip between Tarawa and Kiritimati

In the heart of the Pacific, Kiribati strings its sea-level atolls across thousands of kilometres of ocean. Between the rusting guns of Betio, the maneaba where villages gather and the flats of Kiritimati, a trip here takes long preparation and runs to the rhythm of the tides.

Why visit Kiribati?

Kiribati is among the least visited countries in the world: its 33 atolls are spread across the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, in the middle of Oceania. Travellers come for sport fishing on Kiritimati, the history of the Pacific War on Tarawa and an island culture that still shapes everyday life.

What to discover in Kiribati?

South Tarawa and the history of Betio

South Tarawa holds roughly half of the country's population on a narrow strip of land served by a single road, from Bonriki airport to Betio. The Battle of Tarawa was fought on this islet in November 1943, and Japanese coastal guns and concrete bunkers are still visible along the shore. One day is enough to travel the atoll by shared minibus and see the relics. The rest of a stay is better spent on the far quieter islets of North Tarawa.

The outer Gilbert Islands

From Tarawa, neighbouring Abaiang atoll can be reached by boat or a short Air Kiribati flight and offers a glimpse of outer-island life: maneaba meeting houses, lagoon fishing and nights in simple village guesthouses. Other atolls, such as Butaritari or Abemama, are served by infrequent domestic flights that are often rescheduled at short notice. Leave a buffer of several days before your international flight if you head to the outer islands.

Kiritimati, the atoll of fishing and birds

In the Line Islands, Kiritimati is often cited as the world's largest coral atoll by land area. Its vast sandy flats make it a renowned destination for bonefish fly fishing, practised catch-and-release with local guides, and its protected islets host huge seabird colonies. The weekly Fiji Airways flight between Nadi and Honolulu stops here, which in practice means a one-week stay. The atoll runs on UTC+14.

The Phoenix Islands and regional combinations

The Phoenix Islands form one of the largest marine protected areas in the Pacific, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Almost uninhabited and without regular links, they are not part of a standard trip: only a few specialised expeditions reach them. To combine several micro-states over two or three weeks, look instead to Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands or Nauru, with a near-mandatory stop in Fiji for most flights.

Not to miss in Kiribati

Five experiences that sum up a country of water and coral, from Tarawa to the Line Islands.

Betio's guns

Japanese coastal artillery and bunkers from the 1943 Battle of Tarawa, still standing along the shoreline of Betio islet at the western tip of the atoll.

Traditional maneaba

Large pandanus-roofed community houses where village meetings and celebrations take place, to be entered only on invitation and with respect for local etiquette.

Kiritimati flats

Huge shallow expanses of sand, waded on foot with a guide to fly fish for bonefish before releasing every catch back into the water.

Abaiang lagoon

A peaceful lagoon north of Tarawa, lined with villages and coconut palms, ideal for spending a few nights experiencing outer-atoll life.

Seabird colonies

Terns, boobies and frigatebirds nest in very large numbers on Kiritimati's protected islets, best seen on guided boat trips across the lagoon.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the relics of the Battle of Tarawa?
Yes, on Betio, at the western end of South Tarawa, several Japanese coastal guns, bunkers and wrecks can be seen freely along the shore. The fighting of November 1943 pitted American and Japanese forces against each other. A local guide helps locate the sites, some of which sit right next to homes.
How do you get to Kiritimati from Europe?
The easiest way is to reach Nadi in Fiji, or Honolulu, then take the weekly Fiji Airways flight linking the two cities with a stop on Kiritimati. With only one rotation a week, a stay on the atoll usually lasts seven nights.
Why is Kiritimati among the first places to celebrate New Year?
Kiribati moved the International Date Line in 1995 so the whole country would share the same day of the week. The Line Islands switched to UTC+14, and Kiritimati has since been among the first inhabited places to enter the new year.
Are Tarawa and Kiritimati easy to combine?
Not really: the two atolls are several thousand kilometres apart and direct links are rare, so you often have to route back through Nadi. For a first trip, choose based on your interests: history and culture on Tarawa, fishing and nature on Kiritimati.
Is Kiribati threatened by rising sea levels?
Most atolls in the Gilbert Islands rise only a few metres above the sea, leaving them highly exposed to ocean rise and flooding during king tides. The issue is ever-present in local life and its effects are visible along the Tarawa shoreline.
Should you book Kiritimati bonefishing in advance?
Yes, lodges and fishing guides operate on weekly packages tied to the flight arrival, with a limited number of places. Book several months ahead, especially for the periods most in demand among anglers.
