Visit Liberia: what to do and when to go

Founded in the 19th century by freed people from the United States, Liberia holds a history unlike any other on the West African coast. Travellers come for the Robertsport point breaks, the Sapo rainforest and a tourism scene still in its infancy, far from the beaten track.

Why travel to Liberia?

Liberia is the oldest republic in Africa, proclaimed in 1847, and English is its official language. The country mainly draws surfers, to Robertsport, and nature lovers, to Sapo National Park. Tourist infrastructure remains limited, so a trip is best organised with a guide or a local contact.

What to discover in Liberia?

Monrovia and the Montserrado coast

The capital stretches along a peninsula between the ocean and the Mesurado River. Providence Island, where the first African-American settlers landed in 1822, takes about an hour to visit. Waterside market and the Sinkor beaches round off one or two days in town. Roberts International Airport lies about 50 kilometres away, at least an hour by road: avoid arriving at night without a booked transfer. The country shares borders with Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Robertsport and the Grand Cape Mount coast

About three hours' drive north-west of Monrovia, Robertsport has become known for its long point-break waves, most consistent from May to October. Outside surf season, nearby Lake Piso, a vast coastal lagoon, is best explored by canoe. Accommodation is limited to a few eco-lodges and beach camps: allow two to three nights and book ahead. The access road deteriorates markedly during the rains, between June and September.

Sapo forest and the interior

Sapo National Park, in the south-east, protects one of the last large blocks of Guinean forest, home to pygmy hippos, chimpanzees and duikers. Getting there takes a full day's drive from Monrovia and a guided expedition of several days. Closer in, the Firestone plantation at Harbel and Kpatawee Falls in Bong County make good day trips. To the east, the border with Ivory Coast is crossed mostly by slow overland routes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Monrovia to Robertsport?
About three hours by road in the dry season, longer during the rains when the final stretch of track deteriorates. A four-wheel drive with a driver remains the most reliable option, as shared taxis are slow and uncomfortable.
Can you see pygmy hippos in Sapo National Park?
They live there, but sightings are rare: the species is shy and nocturnal. A visit to Sapo is organised over several days with local guides, bearing in mind that access depends heavily on road conditions.
Is Liberia suitable for a first trip to West Africa?
It suits seasoned travellers better: few hotels outside the capital, difficult roads and poorly organised transport. For a first taste of the region, start with a better-equipped neighbour and keep Liberia for a second trip.
When is the best season to surf in Robertsport?
From May to October, South Atlantic swell reaches the Robertsport points more consistently. This is also the rainy season, so expect heavy downpours, muddy roads and a slower drive from Monrovia.
What remains of African-American history in Monrovia?
Providence Island, the 1822 landing site, and a few old houses in the centre recall the country's founding by the American Colonization Society. The town of Harper, in the far south-east, also keeps houses from that era.
