Visit Sierra Leone: beaches, forests and itinerary

Between forest-covered mountains and some of the finest beaches in West Africa, the Freetown peninsula surprises from the moment you arrive. Further afield, Tiwai Island, the Bunce Island fort and the northern peaks tell the story of a country slowly opening up to curious travellers.

Why visit Sierra Leone?

Sierra Leone brings together, in a small territory, largely undeveloped tropical beaches, forests rich in primates and a heritage tied to the Atlantic slave trade and the founding of Freetown in 1792. English-speaking, it remains one of the most low-key destinations in West Africa, best visited in the dry season.

What to discover in Sierra Leone?

Freetown, between hills and ocean

The capital clings to the hills overlooking the Sierra Leone River estuary. The national museum, the King Jimmy district with its old steps and the Big Market fill a day. In the evening, Lumley Beach gathers restaurants and bars facing the sunset. Watch out on arrival: Lungi airport sits across the estuary, about 30 minutes away by water taxi, or several hours by road. Plan two nights in town, ideally at the start and end of your trip.

The peninsula beaches

South of Freetown, the coastal road strings together white-sand beaches backed by forest, less than two hours from the centre. River No. 2 and Tokeh suit swimming and lodge stays, while Bureh Beach draws surfers, with an active local surf school from November to April. From Kent village, at the tip of the peninsula, a canoe reaches the Banana Islands in about twenty minutes. Three to four nights on the coast form the core of a first trip.

The estuary and the memory of the slave trade

About thirty kilometres up the Sierra Leone River, Bunce Island preserves the ruins of a British trading post from which tens of thousands of captives were deported to the Americas in the 18th century. The boat trip from Freetown takes about an hour, and the visit takes half a day with a guide. The site holds special resonance for the Gullah communities of South Carolina and Georgia, historically linked to this region.

The eastern forests, from Tiwai to Gola

About five to six hours by road from Freetown, Tiwai Island on the Moa River is home to eleven primate species and the very elusive pygmy hippo. You sleep in tents or bungalows, with guided walks and canoe trips: two nights is a minimum. Further east, Gola Rainforest National Park, shared with Liberia, protects one of the last blocks of primary Guinean forest. These areas are best visited from December to April, when tracks are dry.

The northern mountains and savannah

In the Loma Mountains, Mount Bintumani rises to about 1,945 metres, one of the highest points in West Africa. Climbing it takes three to four days with guides and porters from the village of Sinekoro, in the dry season only. Further west, near the border with Guinea, Outamba-Kilimi park mixes savannah and gallery forest, with chimpanzees and rarely seen elephants. Makeni serves as a stopover, about three hours by road from Freetown.

Seasons and travel pace

The dry season, from November to April, is the only truly suitable time: passable roads, calm seas and clear skies, with the harmattan sometimes hazing the horizon in January. From May to October, Freetown ranks among the wettest capitals in Africa, with torrential rain in July and August. Ten days allow you to combine Freetown, the coast and Tiwai. For a broader regional circuit, The Gambia or Ghana, more used to tourism, can be combined by air.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from Lungi airport to Freetown?
The fastest option is the water taxi, crossing the estuary in about thirty minutes to Aberdeen. The road loops around the estuary and takes several hours. Book your transfer in advance, especially for a late arrival.
Can you stay overnight at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary?
Yes, the sanctuary offers a few eco-lodges in the forest above Freetown. Guided visits are booked ahead and let you see the rescued chimpanzees, without direct contact, while learning about the rehabilitation work.
How long should you plan for Tiwai Island?
Two nights at least, since the journey from Freetown takes five to six hours. That leaves time for a guided dawn walk, a canoe trip at dusk and a night walk to try to glimpse the pygmy hippo.
Can you still see Freetown's Cotton Tree?
No, this symbolic silk-cotton tree, associated with the founding of the city by formerly enslaved people, collapsed during a violent storm in May 2023. The central roundabout where it stood remains a landmark and a place of memory for residents.
Which beach should you choose near Freetown?
River No. 2 for the setting and swimming, Tokeh for more comfortable accommodation, Bureh Beach for surfing and a more community-based atmosphere. All are less than two hours by road from central Freetown.
Can you combine Sierra Leone and Guinea by road?
Yes, a road links Freetown to Conakry, a long day's journey depending on the wait at the border. Set off early in the morning and cross the border in daylight, having obtained your Guinean visa beforehand.
Is malaria a serious risk in Sierra Leone?
Yes, it is present year-round throughout the country, including Freetown, and remains a major cause of illness. Preventive treatment, repellent and a mosquito net are essential, to be discussed with a travel health clinic before departure.
