Visit Cappadocia: valleys, balloons and itinerary

Fairy chimneys shaped by erosion, Byzantine churches carved into the rock, underground cities spread over several levels and, at dawn, dozens of balloons drifting over the valleys: Cappadocia is best explored on foot over three or four days, sleeping in a cave hotel.

Why travel to Cappadocia?

Cappadocia brings together, on a volcanic plateau in central Anatolia, unique erosion landscapes, hundreds of rock-cut churches and underground cities. Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia have been UNESCO-listed since 1985. It is also one of the busiest hot air ballooning areas in the world.

What to discover in Cappadocia, valley by valley?

Göreme and the valley triangle

Göreme is the most practical base: cave hotels, trailheads and balloon pick-ups are all concentrated here. Around the village lie the Rose and Red valleys, best walked in late afternoon for sunset, Love Valley with its tuff columns, and Pigeon Valley, which reaches Uçhisar in about two hours on foot. Trails are poorly marked: download an offline map and carry water, as shade is scarce between June and September.

Uçhisar, Ortahisar and the hilltop villages

Uçhisar is crowned by a rock pinnacle riddled with chambers, the highest point in the area, with views across the whole plateau to Mount Erciyes on clear days. Ortahisar, its quieter neighbour, has its own rock castle and carved storehouses where citrus fruit and potatoes are still kept. Both villages fit into half a day and offer accommodation that is often calmer than Göreme, only ten minutes away by road.

Zelve, Paşabağ and Devrent Valley

North of Göreme, on the road to Avanos, come the most spectacular formations. Paşabağ, known as Monks Valley, groups multi-headed chimneys once inhabited by hermits. Zelve is a former cave village abandoned in the mid twentieth century because of rockfalls, now an open-air museum. Devrent, the Imagination Valley, takes twenty minutes to cross for its animal-shaped rocks. Allow half a day for all three, by car or scooter.

The underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı

Dug over several levels into the tuff, these cities could shelter thousands of people and their livestock during invasions. Millstone doors, ventilation shafts, chapels and wine presses are reached through passages that are sometimes very low: visitors with claustrophobia or reduced mobility should skip them. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı lie on the Niğde road, 30 to 40 minutes from Göreme. One is enough to understand the idea; allow an hour on site.

Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery

About 80 km south-west of Göreme, Ihlara Valley is a canyon some fifteen kilometres long cut by the Melendiz river. The path follows the water under poplars and leads to painted rock churches. Most visitors walk three to four hours between the main entrance and Belisırma, where lunch is served by the river. At the northern end, Selime Monastery, carved into the cliff, takes an hour to visit. Plan a full day including the drive.

Avanos, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa

Avanos, crossed by the Kızılırmak, the longest river in Turkey, keeps alive its pottery made from the river's red clay: several workshops demonstrate the kick wheel. Ürgüp is the liveliest small town, with characterful hotels and wine cellars, as Cappadocia has produced wine since antiquity. Mustafapaşa, the former Greek town of Sinasos emptied by the 1923 population exchange, keeps houses with carved facades. One day is enough to link all three by car.

When to go and how many days

April to June and September to October are the best periods: mild temperatures for walking and often clear skies for balloons. Summer is hot and dry by day, but nights stay cool at over 1,000 m altitude. Winter brings snow and frost, beautiful on the fairy chimneys, with more flight cancellations. Allow three days for Göreme and its valleys, four or five to add Ihlara, an underground city and Soğanlı.

Open-Air Museum

Hot air balloon flight

Uçhisar Castle

A rock pinnacle full of chambers at the top of the village, it is the best viewpoint in the region, ideally climbed late in the day.

Frequently asked questions about Cappadocia

What if my balloon flight is cancelled?
Cancellations depend on the wind and are decided by the authorities the same morning. The flight is then refunded or moved to the next day. That is why it is best to book from the first morning of your stay to keep two or three backup slots.
Can you see the balloons without flying?
Yes, and it is free. The best sunrise viewpoints are the hills above Göreme, Love Valley and hotel terraces. Arrive half an hour before dawn: the balloons inflate in the half-light and rise with the sun.
Should I stay in Göreme, Uçhisar or Ürgüp?
Göreme is the most central and best equipped for walking the valleys without a car. Uçhisar offers wider views and a calmer atmosphere. Ürgüp suits travellers with a vehicle who prefer a small town with restaurants and wine cellars.
Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı: which one to visit?
Derinkuyu goes deeper and impresses with its volumes, while Kaymaklı spreads wider and is slightly less demanding physically. Both are close together on the same road: one is enough in a three-day programme.
Is the Ihlara Valley hike difficult?
No, the path is almost flat and follows the river in the shade of trees. The challenge is the access staircase from the main viewpoint, several hundred steps long. A taxi or organised transfer avoids having to walk back the same way.
Can you sleep in a cave room?
Yes, many hotels in Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp occupy former dwellings carved into the tuff. Rooms stay cool in summer; in winter, check the heating. East-facing terraces are the most sought after for watching the balloons.
Is Cappadocia worth visiting in winter?
Yes, snow on the fairy chimneys makes for remarkable landscapes and hotels are cheaper. Days are short, nights are often below freezing and balloon flights are cancelled more often. Bring shoes suited to icy paths.
How long does the Göreme Open-Air Museum take?
Allow one and a half to two hours. Arrive at opening time or in late afternoon to avoid groups, and keep time for Tokalı Church, located below the entrance and included in the same ticket.
Where to taste Cappadocian wine?
The plateau has made wine since antiquity thanks to its volcanic soils. Several estates and cellars in Ürgüp offer tastings of local grapes such as the white emir. Restaurants in Göreme and Uçhisar also serve it by the glass.
