When to go to Santorini for ideal weather?
The best time to visit Santorini falls between April and June, as well as in September-October: temperatures are pleasant, the sea is swimmable and the light superb for photos, with noticeably thinner crowds than in the height of summer. Peak season, from June to September and peaking in July-August, sees heavy crowds around the caldera viewpoints, especially in Oia. From roughly November to March, many establishments close for the low season.
Santorini enjoys a Mediterranean, Cycladic climate similar to that of Mykonos: hot dry summers, mild winters, and the presence of the Meltemi wind, generally somewhat milder here than in Mykonos but still real, particularly in summer.
An island overrun in summer for its sunsets
The island is world famous for its caldera views and sunsets, especially from the village of Oia. This fame translates into very heavy crowds between June and September, peaking in July and August: the iconic viewpoints and the narrow lanes of the clifftop villages fill up considerably, and accommodation prices rise accordingly.
To enjoy Santorini in better conditions, April to June and September-October are the most recommended period: pleasant temperatures, a swimmable sea, superb light, but noticeably thinner crowds and more affordable prices.
A clear slowdown in winter
As in Mykonos, winter marks a clear slowdown in tourism activity: from roughly November to March, many hotels and restaurants close, and the island returns to a much more local, quieter pace. This isn't the period to prioritise for experiencing Santorini's tourist atmosphere, even though the climate stays mild.
Santorini's seasonal highlights
| Period | Climate & crowds |
|---|---|
| June to September | Hot, dry summer, heavy crowds, peaking in July-August. |
| July to August | Viewpoints and clifftop villages very busy, high prices. |
| April to June, September to October | Best time to visit: pleasant weather, more moderate crowds. |
| November to March | Low season, many hotels and restaurants closed. |
| Summer | Meltemi wind present, somewhat milder than in Mykonos. |
| Oia | The most famous village for sunsets, very busy in summer. |
Booking your accommodation and ferry in time
Santorini is a small and highly sought-after island: places to stay with caldera views, in Oia or Fira, are among the first to go, and prices climb noticeably from June to September. For a high-season stay, book several months ahead, especially if you want a room with a view or a terrace.
Ferry and plane connections also fill up quickly in summer. Check the timetables, as they are reduced outside the season, and leave a margin if you are connecting to another flight, since the sea can disrupt crossings on windy days.
What to do depending on the period
In spring and autumn, walking along the caldera from Fira to Oia is far more pleasant than in midsummer: set off early in the morning and bring water and a hat. The black-sand beaches, such as Kamari or Perissa, are best enjoyed from June to September, when the sea is warmer.
Late summer is also a good time for the island's wineries, known for their assyrtiko, with tastings facing the sea. Out of season, some restaurants and hotels close: check before you book.
