Why go to Fernando de Noronha?
Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of 21 islands and islets belonging to the state of Pernambuco, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. About 70% of its area is a marine national park with paid, regulated access. Visitors come for diving, dolphins and some of the best-preserved beaches in Brazil.
Fernando de Noronha must-sees
Five places that alone justify the journey and the access fees.
Baía do Sancho
A golden-sand beach tucked beneath a green cliff, reached by stairs and ladders through the rock, regularly awarded top places in travellers' rankings.
Morro Dois Irmãos
Twin peaks rising from the sea opposite Baía dos Porcos, the archipelago's signature silhouette, best photographed from the viewpoints on the coastal trail.
Dolphin viewpoint
From this lookout above Baía dos Golfinhos, you can watch spinner dolphins early in the morning as they come in large groups to rest in the bay.
Atalaia natural pool
At low tide, a shallow rock basin fills with tropical fish; access is by reservation only, in small groups, with limited time in the water.
Forte dos Remédios
An 18th-century Portuguese fort overlooking the main settlement, with sweeping views over the port, the northern islets and sunsets over the ocean.
What to discover in Fernando de Noronha, from the vila to the bays?
Vila dos Remédios and the north of the island
The main settlement, Vila dos Remédios, gathers the church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the 18th-century Portuguese fort and many of the pousadas. From there, the BR-363, the only paved road at about 7 km, crosses the island from the port to Sueste bay. A local bus runs its full length, a handy complement to rental buggies. In the late afternoon, the fort and Cachorro beach below are where people meet for sunset. Half a day is enough for the historic sights.
Mar de Dentro, bays and cliffs
The coast facing the mainland, known as Mar de Dentro, holds the most photographed bays: Sancho, reached by stairs and a ladder through the cliff, Porcos with its natural pools facing Morro Dois Irmãos, and Golfinhos, a sanctuary where dolphins are watched from a viewpoint at dawn. From December to March, the northern swell builds powerful waves here, popular with surfers at Cacimba do Padre. The rest of the year, the sea is often calm and ideal for snorkelling.
Mar de Fora, the windward coast
Facing the open ocean, the south-east coast catches the trade wind. Here you find Leão beach, a nesting site for green turtles, Sueste bay, where you swim with turtles in a supervised area, and the Atalaia natural pool, open only by reservation and in limited numbers. The sea is rougher than on Mar de Dentro for much of the year: follow the flags and the park staff's instructions before getting in. Allow a full day for this side of the island.
Diving and boat trips
Noronha's waters offer visibility that can exceed 30 metres, with rays, turtles, reef sharks and schools of fish. Dive centres in the vila run try dives and dives for certified divers, as well as boat trips of around three hours along Mar de Dentro, often escorted by dolphins. The wreck of the corvette Ipiranga is among the sites sought by experienced divers. Book several weeks ahead for Brazilian holidays, from December to February and in July.
Frequently asked questions about Fernando de Noronha
How is the Fernando de Noronha TPA calculated?
The environmental preservation tax is due for every day spent on the island, and the cumulative amount grows as your stay gets longer. The scale is revised every year by the archipelago's administration: check the official website before deciding how long to stay.
Do you need the marine park ticket if you only go to the beach?
Yes for most of the famous beaches, such as Sancho, Leão, Sueste or Atalaia, which lie inside the national park. A few beaches near the vila are outside the park, but the ticket, valid for 10 days, is essential to really enjoy the archipelago.
Can you swim with dolphins in Fernando de Noronha?
No. Baía dos Golfinhos is a sanctuary where swimming and boating are forbidden. Dolphins are watched from the viewpoint at dawn, or during boat trips, which often cross paths with them off Mar de Dentro without trying to approach them.
Which season is best for surfing at Cacimba do Padre?
The northern swell reaches Mar de Dentro mainly from December to March, with powerful waves at Cacimba do Padre and Boldró, suited to experienced surfers only. The rest of the year, these beaches are generally calm and better for swimming and snorkelling.
Should you rent a buggy in Fernando de Noronha?
It is not essential. The local bus runs along the BR-363 between the port and Sueste, and taxis fill the gaps. A buggy does give you the freedom to string together beaches and sunset; book it in advance in high season, as the rental fleet is limited.
How do you book the Atalaia natural pool?
Slots are booked through the national park system, ideally when you buy your ticket, because daily places are limited and depend on low tides. Sunscreen and insect repellent are not allowed before swimming, to protect the marine life in the pool.
Are five days in Fernando de Noronha enough for both coasts?
Yes, five days allow a boat trip, a dive, one day per side of the island and the reserved trails. With fewer than three days, you will have to sacrifice one coast. Beyond a week, bear in mind that the preservation tax weighs more and more heavily.
Can you watch turtles nesting on Leão beach?
Leão beach closes in the evening during the nesting season to protect the green turtles. The Tamar project runs supervised activities and talks in the vila, which remain the recommended way to learn more without disturbing the nests.
What time is it in Fernando de Noronha compared with Recife?
The archipelago runs on UTC-2, one hour ahead of Recife, Natal and Brasília. Keep this in mind for return flights and international connections: each ticket shows the local time of its airport, and the difference often catches people out on departure day.
