Visit Osaka

Osaka is lived rather than toured: you eat takoyaki standing on Dotonbori, climb the retro tower of Shinsekai, ride 45 minutes to see the deer of Nara. The city has few monuments but an energy Kyoto lacks, and it makes an ideal base for the whole Kansai region.

Why visit Osaka?

Osaka is the gateway to the Kansai region, with the nearest international airport to Kyoto and Nara. The city is known for its everyday food and for locals seen as blunt and warm; it often serves as a base for exploring western Japan, with Tokyo 2h30 away by bullet train.

Osaka Castle

A keep rebuilt on Hideyoshi's foundations, an eight-floor museum and a view from the top; a free park all around.

Dotonbori

A canal lined with illuminated signs and restaurants, with the Glico runner and the animated crab of Kani Doraku, packed every evening.

Shinsekai and the Tsutenkaku tower

A retro postwar district around a 103-metre tower, home of kushikatsu and of Osaka's working-class atmosphere.

Kuromon Ichiba market

Six hundred metres of covered stalls of fish, fruit and takeaway dishes, nicknamed Osaka's kitchen, open from 9am.

Kaiyukan aquarium

One of the world's largest aquariums, a spiral route around a whale shark tank, on Osaka Bay.

Umeda Sky Building

Two towers linked by a panoramic ring at 170 metres, a Floating Garden open in the evening, best view at sunset.

Sumiyoshi-taisha

One of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with its own architectural style and a very steep red arched bridge.

What to discover in Osaka, district by district?

Minami: Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsekai

Minami, the south, is the city's living heart. Around Namba station, the covered Shinsaibashi arcades and the Kuromon market fill the day, Dotonbori and its canal the evening, when the Glico running man sign and the giant crab of the Kani Doraku restaurant light up. Further south, Shinsekai, a working-class district frozen in the 1950s, is built around the Tsutenkaku tower and its kushikatsu restaurants, where you dip the breaded skewer only once into the shared sauce.

Kita: Umeda and the north

Kita, around Osaka-Umeda station, is the district of business, department stores and underground stations that form a maze several kilometres long. The Umeda Sky Building, two towers linked by a panoramic ring at 170 metres, stays open until 10pm and gives the best view at sunset. Below it, Nakanoshima island lines up the city hall, the 1904 library and the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art, in a black sunken building opened in 2022.

Osaka Castle and the east

The current keep is a 1931 concrete reconstruction on the foundations of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle, with a museum inside and a lift to the eighth floor. The free 105-hectare park around it is one of the city's best cherry-blossom spots in early April and plum-blossom spots in February. Allow half a day with the moat walk and the Hokoku tea pavilion.

The bay: Kaiyukan and Universal Studios

To the west, on the bay, the Kaiyukan aquarium is one of the world's largest: a central 5,400 m³ tank holds a whale shark, and the route spirals down around it. Next to it, the Tempozan Ferris wheel turns above the port. Universal Studios Japan, with its Super Nintendo World and Harry Potter area, takes a full day and needs a dated ticket, or an Express Pass in high season.

Day trips in the Kansai

Nara and its deer are 45 minutes away by Kintetsu train from Namba, Kobe 30 minutes for its Kitano quarter and its beef, Himeji 45 minutes by bullet train for the finest feudal castle in the country. Mount Koya, the centre of Shingon Buddhism with its temple lodgings and forest cemetery, takes 2 hours to reach and is better done as an overnight.

Osaka: frequently asked questions

Should you stay in Osaka or Kyoto to visit the Kansai?
Osaka has more accommodation, often cheaper, better nightlife and direct airport access; Kyoto puts the temples within cycling distance but empties in the evening. For a mixed trip, sleeping in Osaka and doing Kyoto as a day trip works very well.
How many days do you need to visit Osaka?
Two days are enough for Minami, Kita and the castle. A third day allows Nara or Kobe, a fourth Himeji or Universal Studios. Many travellers spend only one or two nights in Osaka and explore from Kyoto; the reverse works just as well.
Is the Osaka Amazing Pass worth it?
It is if you string together at least three paid sites in a day, plus transport. The castle, the Umeda Sky Building, a river cruise and the Keitakuen garden are enough to cover it. For a day mostly spent eating and wandering, it is pointless.
Do you need to book Super Nintendo World in advance?
Access to the area needs a dated park ticket plus a timed entry obtained in the Universal app or an Express Pass. In high season the area reaches capacity in mid-morning: arrive at opening or pay for the Express Pass.
How do you reach central Osaka from Kansai airport?
The Nankai Rapi:t links the airport to Namba in 38 minutes, the JR Haruka serves Tennoji and Shin-Osaka in 35 to 50 minutes. Both are covered by some passes. The limousine bus drops at the main hotels but depends on traffic.
Is Dotonbori at night worth it or too touristy?
It is crowded and very commercial, but the Glico sign, the animated facades and the canal's energy are part of the Osaka experience. Eat on the side streets or at Hozenji Yokocho, a paved lane just off it, rather than on the main strip.
Can you do Nara and Kyoto from Osaka on the same day?
It is technically possible but exhausting: Nara Park in the morning, a train to Kyoto in the early afternoon, and only two or three sights before heading back. It is better to give a full day to each city.
