Zocodover and the monumental core
Plaza de Zocodover, a market square since Muslim times, is the natural starting point: the Alcázar towers above it and the cathedral is a five-minute walk away along calle Comercio. The plateau is barely more than a kilometre from east to west, but its twisting, sloping streets defeat every map: put the phone away and accept getting a little lost. Allow a good half day for the cathedral and the Alcázar, which houses the Army Museum. It is one of the classic stops on any cultural trip to Spain.
