Visit Nicaragua: when to go, itineraries and volcanoes

Between the Pacific and the Caribbean, Nicaragua lines up a chain of volcanoes, some still smoking, two rival colonial cities, Granada and León, a vast lake dotted with islands and surf beaches that remain largely undeveloped. A country best explored slowly, by bus or by boat.

Why travel to Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and one of the least affected by mass tourism. Travellers come to climb volcanoes, wander the colonial streets of Granada and León, and reach Ometepe island on Lake Cocibolca. The political climate has been tense since 2018: check official travel advice before booking.

What to discover in Nicaragua?

Granada and the shores of Lake Cocibolca

Founded in 1524 on the shore of Lake Cocibolca, Granada is one of the oldest colonial cities on the continent. Its colourful facades, yellow cathedral and the bell tower of La Merced can be seen on foot in a day. Two or three nights leave time for a boat trip around the Isletas, an archipelago of more than 300 volcanic islets, and a swim in the Laguna de Apoyo, a crater filled with warm water half an hour away by road.

León, student city and the Maribios volcanoes

Livelier and more political than its rival, León is a city of universities and revolutionary murals. Its UNESCO-listed cathedral can be visited right up to its whitewashed roofs. The city is the base for the Maribios range: Cerro Negro, a young volcano of black ash, is descended on a board in a few minutes, and Telica is watched at night on a two-day hike. Plan three nights and avoid the midday hours, the heat is overwhelming all year round.

Ometepe, the island of two volcanoes

In the middle of the lake, Ometepe is made of two volcanoes joined by an isthmus: Concepción, active and conical, and Maderas, extinct and covered in cloud forest. The ferry from San Jorge, near Rivas, takes about an hour. Allow at least three days: one to circle the island by scooter, one for the San Ramón waterfall, one for the Maderas climb, a full muddy day with a mandatory guide. Climbing Concepción depends on current volcanic activity.

The Pacific coast and its surf spots

In the southwest, San Juan del Sur is the best-known beach town, half an hour from the Costa Rica border. The surrounding beaches, Maderas, Remanso or Popoyo further north, receive a steady swell for much of the year, with offshore winds prized by surfers. From September to January, olive ridley turtles nest in large numbers at the La Flor refuge. Away from the main beaches, roads are unpaved and accommodation should be booked ahead in high season.

The Corn Islands and the Caribbean coast

The Caribbean side lives at a different pace: people speak an English-based Creole and the food mixes coconut and seafood. The Corn Islands are reached by a flight of about an hour and a quarter from Managua to Big Corn, then a thirty-minute panga ride to car-free Little Corn. Snorkelling on the reefs, white sand beaches and generator-powered evenings: three to four days are enough. The sea is often rough at the end of the year, so March to May is better.

The mountainous north and Somoto Canyon

The cooler regions of Matagalpa, Jinotega and Estelí produce most of the country's coffee and cigars. Travellers stay on coffee farms and hike in cloud forest reserves. In the far north, near the Honduras border, Somoto Canyon is explored in half a day of walking, swimming and jumping through the gorges of the Coco River, with a local guide. Avoid the rainy season, from May to October, when the water flow makes the canyon dangerous.

Frequently asked questions about Nicaragua

Granada or León: where to stay on a first trip?
Both deserve two to three nights. Granada appeals with its lake, restored facades and easy access to Masaya and Apoyo. León feels more authentic and is hotter, and gives access to the Maribios volcanoes. On a two-week itinerary, do both.
Can you see lava at Masaya volcano?
The lava lake in the Santiago crater is visible at certain times, depending on volcanic activity. Late afternoon visits are the most spectacular, but time at the rim is limited to a few minutes because of the gases. The park sometimes closes without notice.
How do you get to Ometepe island?
From the port of San Jorge, next to Rivas, ferries and smaller boats reach Moyogalpa in about an hour, several times a day. In strong wind choose the ferry: the small boats roll a lot on the lake.
Do you need a guide to climb Concepción?
Yes, regulations require a local guide for climbing Ometepe's volcanoes. Concepción is a long day of steep walking on volcanic rock, and the summit is closed when volcanic activity increases. Ask locally the day before.
When can you see the turtles at La Flor?
The arribadas, mass nestings of olive ridley turtles, mostly happen between September and January, at night, around the new moon. La Flor refuge is visited from San Juan del Sur with an approved guide, without white torches or flash.
Is the Peñas Blancas border crossing with Costa Rica slow?
Peñas Blancas is the busiest crossing on the Pan-American Highway. Allow one to several hours depending on traffic, with exit and entry fees paid in US dollars. Arrive early in the morning and keep notes in good condition.
Are the Corn Islands worth the detour?
Yes if you have at least ten days: the return flight from Managua takes a day each way. In exchange, Little Corn offers reefs, empty beaches and complete calm. Book flights early, the small planes fill up quickly in high season.
Is Nicaragua safe for travellers?
Petty crime against tourists is comparable to neighbouring countries, but the political climate has been tense since 2018. Avoid any gathering, do not photograph security forces and check official travel advice, updated regularly, before you leave.
Can you combine Nicaragua with a neighbouring country?
The easiest combination is Costa Rica, to the south via the Peñas Blancas border. To the north, Honduras is reached by road from Estelí or León. Thanks to the CA-4 agreement, your stay in Nicaragua counts together with the three northern neighbours.
