Visit Tonga: swim with whales and discover the kingdom

The only Pacific kingdom never colonised, Tonga scatters around 170 islands between Fiji and Samoa. From July to October, humpback whales come to calve in its warm waters, and on Sundays the whole country stops for church.

Why travel to Tonga?

Tonga is one of the few countries in the world where you can swim with humpback whales under supervision, in Vava'u and Ha'apai from July to October. A constitutional monarchy in Oceania that has always kept its independence, it holds on to strong traditions, from the Sunday rest to the ta'ovala mat worn around the waist.

What to discover in Tonga?

Tongatapu and Nuku'alofa

The main island holds the international airport and the capital, Nuku'alofa, where the white wooden royal palace stands on the waterfront near Talamahu market. A day by car covers the island: the Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon in the east, Anahulu cave for a freshwater swim, and the Houma blowholes in the south-west. Two nights are enough before heading to the northern island groups, with one caveat: on Sundays, almost everything is closed.

Vava'u, whales and sailing

About an hour's flight from Tongatapu, Vava'u is the main hub for swimming with humpback whales, from July to October, in small groups with a licensed operator. Its harbour at Neiafu, Port of Refuge, is one of the most sheltered anchorages in the South Pacific and draws passing yachts. Allow four to five nights to fit in several boat trips, as the weather regularly cancels one day in two or three.

Ha'apai, the quiet island group

Between Tongatapu and Vava'u, the low-lying islands of Ha'apai offer empty beaches and village life without mass tourism. Lifuka and its town of Pangai are reached by plane or ferry, then a few simple beachfront lodges allow kayaking, snorkelling and whale watching offshore in season. The group was hit hard by the Hunga Tonga eruption in January 2022: check that accommodation is operating before booking three nights.

'Eua, the hikers' island

About ten minutes by plane or two hours by ferry from Tongatapu, 'Eua stands apart from the rest of the country with its relief: limestone cliffs, rainforest and a national park crossed by trails. Hikes lead to viewpoints on the east coast, natural arches and caves, with a local guide for the less marked routes. Two nights let you enjoy it at an easy pace. Tonga then combines easily with neighbouring Fiji or Samoa.

Frequently asked questions

When can you swim with humpback whales in Tonga?
The official season runs from July to October, with peak sightings in August and September around Vava'u. Trips run in small groups with a licensed guide, who limits the number of swimmers in the water near each whale.
What can you do on a Sunday in Nuku'alofa?
Attending a church service is the most common activity for visitors, for the polyphonic singing. The rest of the country stops: shops closed, no regular taxis or domestic flights. Stock up on Saturday and stay at a beachfront hotel.
How do you get from Tongatapu to Vava'u?
By plane, about an hour with the domestic airline, or by ferry, which is much slower, stops in Ha'apai and sails overnight. The plane is more reliable during whale season, when seats sell out fast.
Does the Hunga Tonga eruption still affect travel?
The January 2022 eruption and the tsunami that followed damaged coastlines and accommodation, especially on Tongatapu and in Ha'apai. Most activities have resumed, but some businesses have closed: check recent reviews before booking.
How do you get to Tonga from Europe?
You connect through New Zealand, Australia or Fiji to reach Fua'amotu airport on Tongatapu. The journey usually takes more than 30 hours with at least two stopovers, Auckland being the most common connection.
Can you swim with whales if you are not a strong swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in open water with fins, mask and snorkel, as entries happen far from shore and sometimes in choppy water. Operators often provide a wetsuit and a vest, but do not take people who cannot swim.
What does the ta'ovala worn in Tonga mean?
It is a woven mat tied around the waist, a sign of respect worn at work, at church and at ceremonies. Visitors do not need to wear one, but modest clothing is expected in the same settings.
