July is one of the most in-demand months of the year for travel, and for good reason: it's summer in the northern hemisphere, school holidays begin, and a large part of the globe enjoys generous sunshine. But not every region of the world fares equally well climate-wise in July, and some very popular destinations actually go through their least pleasant season.
Mediterranean: full summer, heavy crowds
In the Mediterranean, July marks the height of summer. Greece, the Balearic Islands, Tunisia, coastal Morocco and Turkey see clear skies almost every day, with dry heat that easily climbs above 30°C in the afternoon. It's an ideal time for the seaside, but also the busiest and most expensive time of year in these destinations: it's best to book accommodation and flights early.
« A favourable climate doesn't mean an empty destination: some of these are also the busiest of the year. »
Asia and the Indian Ocean: Bali, Mauritius, Réunion
In Asia and the Indian Ocean, July corresponds to the dry season across the Indonesian archipelago, making it a good month for Bali. Mauritius and Réunion, in the southern hemisphere, are going through their austral winter: temperatures are milder, with pleasant dry air, far from the humid heat of the local summer months.
Northern Europe: Norway and Iceland
More surprisingly, July is also an excellent window for Northern Europe. Norway enjoys very long days and a climate milder than you might expect, ideal for exploring the fjords. Iceland stays cool but offers conditions far more stable than outside summer.
East Africa and the Andes: the good seasons
In East Africa, July marks the start of the dry season in Tanzania and Kenya, a sought-after period for safaris and, in Tanzania, for witnessing part of the great migration. In South America, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia go through their dry season in the Andes: clear skies and bright days, even if nights at altitude remain cool.
Destinations to avoid in July
Conversely, July isn't the best time for mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), which enters its rainy season, nor for India, in full monsoon. The Antilles and the Caribbean also enter their hurricane-risk period, which extends into autumn: it's not a dealbreaker, but it's worth knowing before booking.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too hot in the Mediterranean in July?
Afternoons can get very hot, often above 30°C depending on the region. The heat is generally dry around the Mediterranean, which makes it more bearable than humid heat, but it's best to plan activities in the morning or evening.
Is Bali a good destination in July?
Yes, July is the dry season across the Indonesian archipelago, with generally stable, sunny weather. It's also a period of high tourist traffic on the island.
Why avoid the Caribbean in July?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking later in the summer. That doesn't mean a hurricane is certain, but the risk exists and is worth factoring in, notably with suitable travel insurance.
