Visit Albufeira

Known for its hotels and nightlife, Albufeira also hides a whitewashed old town perched above coves reachable on foot. It is one of the most practical bases on the Algarve for mixing beach days, boat trips to the caves and excursions inland.

Why visit Albufeira?

Albufeira combines a whitewashed old town, about ten beaches within twenty minutes on foot or by car, and a marina where boat trips to the cliffs and caves depart. It is one of the liveliest resorts in the Algarve, with a sharp peak in July and August.

What to discover in Albufeira?

The old town and its coves

Albufeira's historic heart can be walked in a morning. Its whitewashed lanes converge on Praça da República and the Matriz church, before dropping through a stone tunnel to Praia do Túnel and Praia dos Pescadores, where fishing boats are still pulled up on the sand. Praia do Peneco, more sheltered, suits children. In the evening, grilled-fish terraces fill the pedestrian streets.

Cliff-backed beaches around town

Beyond the old town, the coast alternates big beaches and tucked-away coves. Praia da Oura, ten minutes on foot from the centre, is the busiest. To the east, Praia da Falésia unrolls several kilometres of sand beneath ochre and red cliffs, as far as Olhos de Água, a former fishing village. To the west, Praia da Coelha and Praia da Galé offer quieter stretches of sand.

The nightlife of the Strip

Albufeira's party reputation rests on Rua Cândido dos Reis, nicknamed the Strip, a long street of bars, terraces and clubs open from May to September. The mood is young, loud and lively until dawn in summer. For calmer evenings, the old town offers restaurants and fado bars, and the marina has tables facing the sailboats. Most venues stay open until four in the morning at the peak of the season, so light sleepers should book a room away from the street.

By boat to the coastal caves

From the marina, boats and kayaks follow the Algarve's limestone cliffs. The Benagil cave, with its roof open to the sky, is about thirty minutes' drive away in the neighbouring municipality of Lagoa. Trips must be booked ahead in summer. Praia da Marinha, ranked among Portugal's finest, and the Algar Seco cliffs at Carvoeiro complete the excursion. Calm mornings give the best light and the clearest water, while afternoon winds often make the sea rougher.

Silves and the Monchique mountains

To leave the seafront, the hinterland offers two day trips by car. Silves, a former Moorish capital about thirty minutes away, is visited around its red sandstone castle and Gothic cathedral. Further north, the Monchique mountains rise to the Foia, the Algarve's highest point at 902 metres, then descend to the spa village of Caldas de Monchique. Both trips are easier with a car, and a long day covers the two.

Frequently asked questions about Albufeira

Is Albufeira suitable for families?
Yes, especially outside July and August: Praia do Peneco and Praia da Oura are safe and easy to reach, and many hotels have pools. The Strip is noisy at night, so stay in the old town or away from it.
Do you need a car in Albufeira?
Not for the old town and nearby beaches, which are done on foot or by little tourist train. A car becomes useful for Benagil, Silves or Monchique, or you can book organised excursions from the marina.
How do you get from Albufeira to Faro?
Faro airport is about 40 km away. Allow 35 to 45 minutes by taxi or shuttle, or an hour on a regular bus. To visit Faro itself, half a day is enough.
When should you avoid Albufeira?
July and August bring the biggest crowds, the highest prices and the hottest weather, and most beaches are packed. From November to March, some seafront bars and restaurants close. Quieter months such as May or late September give the best balance of weather and space.
Can you visit the Benagil cave from Albufeira?
Yes, by boat or kayak, about thirty minutes' drive away in the neighbouring municipality of Lagoa. Departures are frequent in summer but should be booked ahead; off season, the sea can block access to the cave.
