Visiting Malta: when to go, budget and itinerary across the islands

Three islands covering 316 km², yet home to temples older than the pyramids, a baroque capital listed in full by UNESCO and turquoise coves less than an hour apart. Here are month-by-month weather, real budgets and realistic itineraries to organise your stay.

Why choose Malta over the rest of the Mediterranean?

Malta packs seven millennia of history into a tiny territory, from megalithic temples to the fortresses of the Knights of St John, with a sea above 20C from June to November. Everything is under an hour away, English is an official language and flights from Paris take under three hours.

What to see in Malta?

Valletta and the Grand Harbour

Built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565, Valletta takes two days on foot: the co-cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace, Fort St Elmo and gardens perched above the harbour. Across the water, the Three Cities, Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua, are a 10-minute ferry away and keep a neighbourhood life the capital has lost. For a base, Sliema, linked to Valletta by a 10-minute ferry, offers more choice and prices often a quarter lower.

Mdina, Rabat and the centre of the island

A 25-minute drive from Valletta, the fortified former capital of Mdina has only a few hundred residents and empties of day-trippers around 5pm: that is the time to walk it. Neighbouring Rabat hides St Paul's catacombs, and the Mosta Rotunda, whose dome survived a bomb in 1942, lies on the way. Further south, the Dingli Cliffs drop 250 metres into the sea. One day covers it all, two nights let you enjoy it in peace.

The prehistoric South and the fishing villages

Malta's south-east holds most of its Neolithic heritage: the Paola Hypogeum, an underground sanctuary carved around 4000 BC, the Tarxien temples, then Hagar Qim and Mnajdra facing the sea. The Hypogeum admits only a few dozen visitors a day, so book several weeks ahead, at around 40 euros per ticket. On Sunday mornings, the Marsaxlokk fish market fills the harbour with painted boats; allow half a day before heading off for a swim at St Peter's Pool.

Gozo and the crossings from Malta

The Cirkewwa ferry takes 25 minutes to reach the island of Gozo, more rural, greener and cheaper, which deserves at least three nights rather than a day trip. In between, Comino has a single hotel and is mostly visited by boat from Mellieha or Sliema. From Valletta, a catamaran reaches Pozzallo in about 1 hour 45 minutes: enough to combine Malta with Sicily and southern Italy in the same trip.

Not to miss

Eight visits that justify the trip on their own, all less than an hour from each other.

St John's Co-Cathedral

A fully gilded baroque interior, a floor of nearly 400 marble tombstones of knights and two Caravaggio canvases, including the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

An underground necropolis carved into limestone nearly 6,000 years ago, UNESCO-listed, with visits restricted to small groups.

Hagar Qim temples

Megalithic blocks weighing several tonnes set on the clifftops, with Mnajdra below, where the equinox sun shines straight through the main doorway.

Blue Lagoon

Shallow turquoise water between Comino and Cominotto, best visited on the first morning boat or late in the day to avoid the crowds.

Blue Grotto

Sea arches on the south coast visited by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq in 25 minutes, with the best water colour before noon.

Noon gun

A daily salute fired from the Saluting Battery below the Upper Barrakka Gardens, with a sweeping view over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities.

Dingli Cliffs

The island's highest point, cliffs 250 metres above the sea, best walked at sunset from the chapel of St Mary Magdalene.

Village festas

From June to September, a parish celebrates its saint every weekend: brass bands, processions, lit-up streets and fireworks until late.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum far in advance?
Yes. Daily visitor numbers are strictly capped to protect the site, and slots often sell out several weeks ahead, especially from April to October. Book on the Heritage Malta website as soon as your dates are set; pricier last-minute tickets do exist.
Is it better to stay in Valletta or Sliema?
Valletta is more beautiful and very quiet in the evening, but it has fewer rooms and they cost more. Sliema is a 10-minute ferry from the capital, has far more hotels and offers swimming off the rocks. For a first trip without a car, Sliema is often more practical.
Can you see Gozo in a day trip from Malta?
It can be done with the 25-minute ferry from Cirkewwa or the fast ferry from Valletta, but you will only see the Cittadella and one or two sites. Three nights on the island let you enjoy the coves, the diving and the villages without spending the day in transit.
Can you swim in Malta in October or November?
Yes, the sea stays around 24C in October and about 21C in November, thanks to the Mediterranean's thermal inertia. Lidos and some managed beaches close at the end of the season, but rocky coves stay open; just watch out for days with a north-east wind.
Where can you see Game of Thrones filming locations in Malta?
The first season was partly shot in Malta: Mdina's main gate, Fort Ricasoli near Kalkara and the San Anton Gardens were all used as sets. Gozo's Azure Window, seen in the series, collapsed in 2017.
Which dish should you try first in Malta?
Stuffat tal-fenek, rabbit slowly stewed in wine, is the national dish, often served at a family fenkata. For everyday eating, ricotta or pea pastizzi cost a few dozen cents, best washed down with a Kinnie, the Maltese bitter-orange soft drink.
