Java

In the centre of the island, Yogyakarta serves as a base for exploring the Buddhist temple of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world, and the Hindu complex of Prambanan, with its tall carved stone towers. The city also holds a still-active sultanate and batik craftsmanship recognised throughout the country. Further west, Jakarta, the country's sprawling capital, mixes a colonial old town, modern skyscrapers and lively markets, while Bandung, perched at altitude, charms visitors with its Art Deco architecture and nearby volcanoes such as Tangkuban Perahu.

To the east of the island, the Bromo Tengger Semeru massif holds active volcanoes whose smoking craters and ash landscapes draw hikers, especially for sunrise views over Mount Bromo. Java is also home to numerous highland tea and coffee plantations, as well as traditional villages that keep textile craftsmanship and gamelan music alive. With over 140 million inhabitants, the island remains Indonesia's demographic and economic heart, offering both intense urban life and preserved rural landscapes.
